Chudleigh is an ancient wool town located within the Teignbridge District Council area of Devon, England between Newton Abbot and Exeter. The electoral ward with an equivalent name had a population of 6,125 at the 2011 census.

Chudleigh is extremely near to the fringes of Dartmoor and within the Teign Valley. Nearby Castle Dyke is an Iron Age Hill Fort which demonstrates far earlier settlement within the area. it's also near Haldon Forest, a Forestry Commission property.

The town has been bypassed by the A38 road since 1972. it's expanded a great deal in recent years as commuter houses are built around its edges, but still retains a reasonably traditional town centre.

This captivating and charming town features a vast history dating back over thousands of years. Prehistoric remains are found within the caves at Rock, while an Iron Age hillfort overlooks the beautiful town. Today the town of Chudleigh is flourishing and is a perfect base for your holiday if you wish to explore the region of South Devon.

History of Chudleigh

The origins of Chudleigh town are Saxon, and you'll still see a number of the first place names there today. After the Norman Conquest the town grew in importance, finally being granted a charter for an annual fair by King Edward II in 1309.

As the town grew it became a centre for wool production, but disaster struck in 1807 when an enormous fire destroyed two thirds of the town. Chudleigh’s position on the primary coaching route between the cities of Exeter and Plymouth kept the town alive (and, because of the various ale houses and taverns that opened , quite rowdy at times).
